massive all original and intact early 20th century chicago church exterior bell tower or steeple patinated gothic style copper finial attributed to the friedley-voshardt company, chicago, ills. the towering freestanding church ornament is multifaceted with intricate stamped copper crockets or curled leafage below the spear-shaped point. the remarkable and historically important exterior church ornament was salvaged from st. john united church, completed in 1910. the church is currently undergoing systematic deconstruction, which will include the removal of the bronze bell and cornerstone. a total of five copper finials were salvaged from the bell tower. the church was built in 1910 by lane and borkemeyer, which included a hundred foot tower and a basement equipped with an auditorium containing four hundred seats. the german church was officially dedicated on december 10th, 1910.
