original late 19th century american victorian era ornamental cast iron interior residential fireplace gas insert cover or surround designed and fabricated by the dawson brothers, chicago, il. the insert contains two oppose pilasters with fluted shafts and decorative capitals. intricate foliage is found above the hood. the perforated ash grate features protruding "serpentine fretwork" with a centrally located slot for the valve key. mostly uniform metallic gold paint finish. salvaged from a chicago graystone residence built around 1897. measures 30 1/2 x 31 inches.
