original and completely intact enameled cast iron inset ventilation grate salvaged from an interior utility closet door found within the extant historically important continental and commercial national bank building designed in 1914 by architect daniel burnham. the bank building was one of burnham's last building commissions. the grate features a repeating pierced neoclassical "union jack" motif, which was also used along the walls of the interior three-story barrel-vaulted banking hall. the exact fabricator is not known. the grate is identical in design and relief on front and back sides. measures 20 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches.
