early 1930's original american art deco style machine age single-sided heavy gauge steel "men" sign likely fabricated by or for the r.h. gardner & co., chicago, il. the rectangular-shaped sign contains lightly incised lettering with a dark brown-black enameled inlay to accentuate the lettering. the sign was salvaged from an office floor lavatory door in downtown chicago's palmolive building. the sign was likely added shortly after construction in 1929. the 37-story extant art deco style palmolive building was built by holabird & root and completed in 1929. it was home to the colgate-palmolive-peet corporation. the palmolive building later became known as the playboy building from 1965 to 1989, when it was home to playboy magazine. a beacon named for the aviator charles lindbergh was added to the building in 1930. the beacon was renamed the palmolive after lindbergh's support of nazi germany. it rotated a full 360 degrees and was intended to help guide airplanes safely to midway airport. measures 6 3/4 x 2 1/4 inches
