rare and highly collectible mid-19th century philadelphia privy-dug deep cobalt blue iron pontiled porter bottle with applied double tapered finish distributed by bottler patrick conway of philadelphia, pa. the squat body has strong seams running from below the heel to the base of the neck, indicating it was blown in a 2 piece mold. the base has a high kickup and heavy iron residue. cleanly embossed on the front is the bottler’s name “p. conway” arched over the words “bottler” and the abbreviated “philadelphia” with a raised end-letter. on the reverse is embossed “no. 8 hunter st / & / 108 filbert st.” the bottle features large bubbles in the body, minor interior dirt, and whittling on the finish. there is a small, shallow sliver on the slop underside of the applied ring. conway shows up in several philadelphia city directories with the majority found in the early to mid-1850's. the address of his bottling "works" does change throughout the years.
