all original antique c.1890's or early 1900's hand-letterpressed business card with product sizing table on reverse. the square white card displays the names of the president and vice president -- samuel and george spry -- in the upper corners. in mixed fonts the card reads "john spry lumber co. / wholesale lumber / shingles / ashland ave., south of 22d street, / chicago, ill. / please retain this card"; the text "wholesale lumber" overlaps "shingles" in an unusual block lettered wood graphic. the front of the card lists long distance telephones and bears the stamp "w.w. wells" in the lower left corner. on the reverse is a table showing "number of feet in bill stuff and timber". john spry was born in cornwall, england in 1828 and came to chicago in 1843. he began work for a lumber dealer on franklin street at a salary of $12. some time in the early 1850's he became connected with lind & smith, and gradually advanced to making $50 per month. in 1854 he became connected with f.b. gardiner, and after a few years of service with that firm he was given a working interest. in 1873 the f.b. gardiner company was organized with mr. spry as a member of the firm and secretary of the company. this was afterward changed to gardiner & spry, continuing as such until 1885, when gardiner retired and the john spry lumber company was formed. thereafter mr. spry was president (and his four sons held all the stock outside of what stood in his own name). the extensive lumber yards were located at ashland avenue and 22nd street, and the company owned vast bodies of timber land, including 20,000 acres in the lake superior region, on the "soo" line. john spry died in 1891 of uraemic poisoning, at his home on 481 west monroe street.
