one of a kind refinished c. 1966 american vintage industrial bright copper doll head mold fabricated for the deluxe reading corp., elizabethtown, new jersey. the oversized baby doll head mold with hollow cavity is tightly affixed to the original welded-joint angle steel frame. traces of doll resin evident. brass inventory or production tags with lightly incised lettering identify both the part number and year. likely fabricated (at least in part) by the detrit stamping company, detroit, mich. the stand alone doll head has been thoroughly cleaned and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. makes for an ideal bookend, etc. deluxe reading was a toy manufacturer based in elizabethtown, new jersey and was primarily known for their dolls deluxe reading dolls were sold (beginning in the 1950’s through the late 1970's) primarily in supermarkets and are often referred to as “grocery store dolls.” they were considered an inexpensive alternative to department store dolls, although of similar quality. the toys were packaged in large, colorful boxes that could be easily seen atop grocery store shelves. this "production mold" was created from a wax sculpture placed into a chemical/plating bath where the wax melts away and the copper mold remains. vinyl, polymer, clay or another medium is used to create the actual doll parts that are then treated with skin tones, threaded hair, etc. the molds are typically "retired" after the production of 250-300 finished appendages. the vintage doll form was salvaged from an old doll assembly factory in new york. retains the original steel mounting brackets. great surface patina, with facial features partially obscured by vinyl residue. similar forms are available. during the 19th century dolls' heads were often made of porcelain and combined with a body of leather, cloth, wood, or composite materials, like papier-mâché or composition, a mix of pulp, sawdust, glue and similar materials. with the advent of polymer and plastic materials in the 20th century, doll making largely shifted to these materials. the low cost, ease of manufacture and durability of plastic materials meant new types of dolls could be mass produced at a lower price. the earliest materials were rubber and celluloid. from the mid-20th century soft vinyl became the dominant material. several heads available. meausres 5 x 4 3/4 x 7 inches.
