very unique and visually appealing all original early 20th century patented "mich" indicator floor stand designed and fabricated by the roe stephens mfg. co., detroit, mich. the solidly-built tapered and fluted cast iron stand or pedestal base has been brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. the remarkably heavy stand contains a solid oversized base or floor plate with large holes for mounting against the floor. the circular-shaped top contains a large central opening with surrounding holes used for heavy duty bolts. the manufacturer plaque with raised lettering is comprised of bronze and riveted tightly against the fluted column with brass rivets. an additional identification tag contains the city (i.e., grand rapids, mich.) where it was installed. established in the late 19th century, the roe stephens manufacturing company. detroit, mich., was greatly expanded in 1905, by purchasing the plant, equipment and business of the late michigan brass & iron works, of detroit. the roe stephens plant was devoted to the manufacture of scott pop safety valves, goldsmith throttle valves, scott gate valves, angle, globe and check valves and steam specialties. the “michigan plant" continued to manufacture a full line of fire hydrants, "michigan," "flower-bailey" and “roe stephens“ patterns: also the michigan water gates, in all sizes (2 to 120 inches); valve boxes, indicator posts, foot valves, air and relief valves. plain and indicator floor stands: also a full line of scott's goods in iron body, bronze mounted and all iron. the company had a large line of patterns in all the different pressures for steam, air, gas and water valves and specials, and furnished wedge-shaped or parallel disks in gate valves. the michigan plant and office were located in the michigan central railway junction yards, west detroit. base measures 17 x 17 inches, top diameter of 12 inches, and sits 29 inches in height
