metropolitan hall (formerly pabst tavern) - architect -- otto strack




built in 1890-91 w/ otto strack serving as architect. the pabst hall was a wood clad building featuring stylistic queene anna architectural elements. the facade was asymmetrical in design, which included a "boomtown" front, gabled roof, turrets w/ pressed tin finials, brackets and barge board fretwork. the pabst tavern and/or metro. hall was one of the finest examples of a brewery-built corner tavern within the city of milwaukee. the renowned architect otto strack designed other structures including, but not limited to the pabst theater and kalvelage residence. during the demolition, we discovered several ruby red "exit" globes dating to the depression. several stylish thonet chairs were found throughout the social hall. we were able to recapture the ornamental exterior brackets, barge board and corbels near the corner entrance. an old window neon sign was saved as well. while searching the rafters, we discovered an old 4 by 8 ft. flag dating to the 1890's. the solid oak newels and railing were successfully removed as well. sadly, we were not able to remove the massive painted beer advertisement painted on the clapboard siding. the condition was exceptional...painted in the 1920's, the sign was later covered about 20 years later. during asbestos removal we discovered the sign w/ wonderfully vibrant colors. however, the clapboard was severely rotten...
