unique polychrome terra cotta façade small westside commercial bld. - chicago, il
incredibly sad to see this little terra cotta treasure crumble to the ground. located on washington near pulaski, there is somewhat of a mystery surrounding the building. likely built in the late teens, perhaps early 1920's. the original establishment and/or intended use is unknown. served as an auto garage for at least 40 years. the interior was entirely gutted to the brick. the facade was made of a vibrant blue and gold leafed terra cotta likely made by the american terra cotta co. highlights included a spread-winged eagle flanked by greek gods. the projecting cornice had large terra cotta blocks emulating a clay tile roof with dentil work tucked in below. the borders bore a rope pattern that terminated at small decorative pilaster capitals. all of the key features, along w/ several plain blue terra cotta block was rescued before and during the demolition at the end of 2007.
