extravagant pair of c. 1920's art deco style downtown chicago building terra cotta birds - very unusual
polychrome w/ glaze finish art deco style terra cotta birds. appear to have combined characteristics of a hawk, "phoenix" bird, and "huxwhukw" (man-eating bird). manufactured by the american terra cotta co. these building artifacts are highly unique to the building (i.e., not considered "common stock" available in their catalogs. removed from the richman bros. building located on 114 s. state street here in chicago. the building was built in 1929. the architect is unknown. the birds have a pink, green, yellow and black color arrangement. the condition is excellent. originally flanked the sides of the building along the roofline. the stark lines and zig-zag patterns really enhance the overall appearance. rare and one of kind artifacts.
