late 19th century "poor man" queen anne style victorian cottage - c. 1876
the one feature of this otherwise bland victorian cottage is the semi-circle bay window, accentuated by machine cut fluted fan pattern panels. in fact, this particular window arrangement might be a one of a kind. granted, we have come across bay windows of almost identical shape, but the decorative panels, along w/ the queen anne style colored glass windows makes this an exception to the rule. the remainder of the house contained typical "bullseye" pattern header blocks accompanied by machine cut molding. white pine and fir were used almost entirely throughout. the colored glass panel queen anne style windows were incorporated in almost all the other windows within the house. the fact that we found a large pile of them in the basement confirms this. one other rather weird feature... along the exterior surround of the entrance door, we discovered a porcelain speaking tube end piece. very unusual (most speaking tubes were made of nickel-plated tin). there was no sign of an original door bell, so we suspect that the guest would knock, followed by speaking into the tube to confirm his/her identity. located on the westside of chicago -- demolished 2006.
