hard to find and highly collectible c.1860's ornamental cast iron figural surface mount rimlock manufactured by the russell & erwin mfg. co., new britain, ct. the "pioneer" design was patented by cornelius b. erwin on august 10, 1858. the passage door size lock was first introduced in their 1865 hardware catalog. the pioneer, along with the "eagle", "emigrant" and "village", were the first pictorial evidence of decorative locks in america. the deep relief rimlock retains the original bronze latch and dead bolt. contains a uniform brushed metal finish.
