mid-nineteenth century (1860-1870) privy-dug deep blue aqua porter shaped bottle with a twitchell-style applied tapered lip and rounded ring manufactured in new jersey, likely by the bridgeton glass works. the seamless body of the glass is embossed “s.w. bell / 1861 / new brunswick” and has a long neck leading to a somewhat crude applied finish. the tumbled bottle features allover pitting and bubbles, and a light interior haze. samuel w. bell was born in 1821, and is listed in the us federal census for 1860 as a porter and ale bottler. by 1870 samuel bell was listed as a manufacturer of mineral water, and by 1880 he was out of the business, listed as a mason.
