one of two nearly identical original c. 1840's medium blue-green iron pontiled soda or mineral water bottle manufactured for john tweddle jr. in new york. the low steep shoulders and long narrow neck are finished with an applied blob top that exhibits allover whittling and some slop. strong side seams run from base to neck, evidencing manufacture with a two-leaf mold. the front body is embossed "tweddle's/ celebrated / soda or mineral / waters", while the reverse reads, "courtland street / 38 / new york". the base has a moderate kickup with heavy residue from iron pontil. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including bubbles, surface scratches, and whittling. overall the glass is nearly attic condition, appearing vibrant and free of haze after being cleaned by rinsing, not tumbling. this particular bottle was salvaged from an underground railroad tunnel underneath a farmhouse in freehold, new jersey. according to city directories, tweddle operated at 38 courtland around 1845. the depth of the iron-pontiled base, surface wear and applied lip vary from one bottle to the next.
