rarely does one find an all original and completely intact residential entrance or vestibule door lockset with every component being apart of the short-lived and thus, highly desirable anglo-japanese designed hardware fabricated by the russell & erwin company, with design patents issued as early as 1879.
this recently discovered vestibule door set is unique in that every component is intact and the surface patina has not been altered (likely since installation sometime in the 1880's).
the amazingly detailed "geisha" girl doorknobs are truly exceptional, both in design and execution. the facial features show very little wear, which for most knobs of this type discovered, the nose often is substantially rubbed down.
in addition to the complete locket set acquired this week, i've managed to collect several other hardware components fabricated for this line of hardware. the floral motifs and japanese figures are used time and again.
the majority of the design patents for this hardware "suite" were issued to rodolphe christesen in 1879 for the russell & erwin mfg. company.
