pemit issued for demolition of the last original wabash elevated station

the fate of the last original elevated "l" station on wabash avenue has been officially sealed when the city issued a demolition permit for the late 19th century palladian-designed structure. i very much hope to work with the wrecker to not only document (onsite) the station's destruction, but also collect any and all artifacts that otherwise will be scrapped.

in the meantime, i took a moment to photograph the station's exterior as it sits, awaiting its systematic deconstruction. the gallery below offers a glimpse of some of the exterior zinc metal ornamentation that was likely fabricated by the chicago-based friedley-voshardt company.

the madison/wabash station closed at approximately 1:45am, monday, march 16, 2015, for the construction of the new washington/wabash station, with demolition to begin soon after.
