a photographic survey of industrial gloom

i have a feeling oddball movie director david lynch would find inspiration at this overwhelmingly desolate and gloomy demolition job site, that once was home to one of the largest foundries in the chicago area. the thick overcast blanket prevented the sun from making an appearance throughout the day. the light was a bit tricky, with the lack of a warm glow and/or added dimension and depth produced by shadows.

despite this, the massive acreage of building dismemberment was incredibly calming. the collection of machines, with their ferocious hydraulic jaws, were at a standstill when we arrived to salvage vintage electric components, bridge plaques and riveted metal scraps for repurposing.

as i wandered around the industrial campus to photodocument the carnage, i could not help but think that i was on the "eraserhead" movie set. i felt henry (played by john nance) would be hiding somewhere, perhaps in one of the sheds, transfixed by the creepy little lady who lived in the radiator.
