since 1910, st. john's oversized cast bronze church bell was used to call the congregation to service, announce weddings, and of course, toll at funerals.
late last week that oversized bell, fabricated by the henery stuckstede foundry, st. louis, mo., was carefully extracted from the exposed bell tower and brought to my studio where it will be cleaned and possibly restored.
additional information on the foundry, church bells, and so on will be examined in a future post.
the following images provide a quick sequential overview of st. john's bell from resting on its cradle "in situ" to being documented in my studio shortly after it was brought down and transported to the warehouse.
the bronze bell was fully exposed by early morning in preparation for extraction.
the church bell was removed as a "system," with a-frames, yoke, clapper and single sheave wheel intact.
transport to the warehouse for further documentation.
the massive early 20th century solid bronze bell was extracted with flanking unornamented cast iron a-frame bases or stands, yoke, clapper and bent wood wheel with a single sheave. both the clapper and yoke exhibit extensive corrosion, but remain structurally sound.
