1880's bissel street mansion interior salvage gets underway

research continues on a marvelous brick mansion that is in the process of being converted into a pre-school. the structure envelops two city lots, and appears to have been built around 1887.
to accommodate the needs of the developers and satisfy building codes, the interior has been subject to alteration. unfortunately this means the original hand-carved oak staircase was removed. still, the building retains many significant, intact elements – including glass windows, vestibule and entrance doors, and marble fireplaces.
during the two-day salvage of the bissell street mansion it became apparent that the 19th century residence had actually been modified multiple times over the years, prior to these conversion efforts. quite a few of the artifacts slated for our removal had been installed to make the house appear “period appropriate.” from what i could ascertain, original elements included three mantels, passage doors outfitted with chicago-niles “spindle-less” knobs and escutcheons, the staircase, and the vestibule, which were all heavily repaired but nonetheless intact.
photographs of the exterior and interior of the house contribute to an extensive visual record of the building prior to the salvage operation. as usual the camera has remained a necessary tool throughout, showing materials and methodologies during each phases of deconstruction on the interior. once the artifacts selected for extraction were removed, i performed a final photo-review, so there is a visual record at each phase of the salvage (before, during and after). i anticipate editing photos and conducting research will take a great deal of time, but once completed they will form an entry point to a narrative of the building’s history.
extracted architectural elements recently photographed in my studio are shown below. the salvage is in progress so there is still a great deal of research and documentation needed.
