hard to find intact and all original privy dug clear glass and nicely cleaned medicinal bottle manufactured for willam dale of chicago, il. the oval body has steeply rounded shoulders, a short neck and a flared, medicinal lip. the front body is embossed "wm dale / chemist / chicago" within a round ornamental border. seams evidence use of keyed hinge mold. the bottle remains in good condition, with no chips or cracks. william dale was born in scotland in 1842, and was educated at the academy of this native town. after receiving his english education, he was apprenticed in a drug store, where he served for four years before going to glasgow. he remained in another drugstore for four more years and then established a store of his own. in 1865 he moved to chicago. he first worked for two years at buck & rayner's and then, in partnership with john heiland, established the house of dale & heilad at no. 155 clark street. after the fire of 1871 the firm moved to the west side for a year, and there william dale re-opened at the old stand until 1879. thereafter he established a drug store at the corner of clark and madison, which under his management, became one of the most popular pharmacies in the city.
