largely intact american 19th century civil war era black enameled ornamental cast iron fireplace and/or surround salvaged from a lower manhattan tenement row house long since demolished. the american made mantle surround would have had a primitive marble, wood or cast iron shelf. the highly desirable "horseshoe" opening surrounded a small brick-lined firebox containing small amount of wood or coal. manufactured by j.w. fiske, new york city. measures 36 1/2 x 26 1/2 inches.
