mid-nineteenth century vibrant medium cobalt blue soda bottle manufactured for boley & company. the front body features a clean strike in the form of embossing, "boley & co / sac city cal", with raised end-letters in the abbreviated 'co', 'sac', and 'cal' and strong whittling within the square of the slug plate. the squat body and long narrow neck are finished with an intact applied blob top. at the base is a deep kickup with some residue from manufacture with iron pontil. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including allover seeding and large vertical bubbles. the bottle has been tumbled so appears clear and free of haze. the first soda manufacturing works in sacramento city was opened by a.g. boley in 1849 on 1st (front) street. the capacity was 500 dozen bottles per day. lafayette and addison boley maintained their works until at least 1857. by 1860 there is no mention of them being in the soda water manufacturing business. the first advertisement for boley and avaline, in the 1852 sacramento daily union, informs the public that boley & avaline have placed large sign cards in establishments that sell their soda water product and the bottoms of their bottles are painted with venetian red paint.
