fine example of a pre-war vintage industrial ironrite "health" posture chair designed and patented by herman a . sperlich. the streamlined style chair is comprised of cold-rolled high tensile strength steel with uniform brushed metal finish. the maple wood saddle seat and contoured backrest are bolted firmly to the base. the original manufacturer label is found on the backside of tilting backrest. dates to 1938-40. the bent steel chair was manufactured by the ironrite ironer co., detroit, mi. measures approximately 18 x 19 x 17 inches. ironrite ironer co. manufactured electric ironing machines marketed to american housewives as the modern antidote to the drudgery of hand ironing. in the late 1930's it launched the health chair to complement its machines by facilitating "a scientifically correct ironing posture." this health chair was shown in momas useful objects of american design under $10 exhibitions in 1940 and 1941. world war ii delayed mass production of the chair but stimulated the development of ergonomics, the systematic study of the interface between the human body and the designed environment. when production resumed after the war, the benefits of the health chair were advocated by ironrite instructors, who provided free demonstrations at "ironing schools" as well as private home lessons.
