refinished late 19th century american industrial interior city saloon pub table designed and fabricated in chicago by the r. rothschild's sons company of cincinnati, oh. the freestanding cast iron pedestal base is tapered and turned with a stepped flange containing manufacturer markings in the form of deeply embossed lettering. the octagonal-shaped central post is equipped with a cast iron ring (once containing a wood undershelf for empty glassware). the spacious rock hard maple wood circular tabletop has been refinished. the ornamental iron base has been brushed down to bare metal and treated with a clear coat lacquer. the rothschild table was salvaged form a chicago hotel bar. rothschild's sons was founded in cincinnati, oh., in 1866 by r. rothschild, who, after a long and successful mercantile career, died in 1881. his sons, messrs. julius, charles, and david rothschild, succeeded to the business, building a most extensive trade in the production of saloon, office, and bank fixtures, mirrors, refrigerators, beer-coolers, billiard-tables, etc. the headquarters in cincinnati was situated at nos. 290 to 294 west sixth street and nos. 141 to 147 george street, while the firm had likewise opened a branch at no. 40 white street, new york. the bars and fixtures in all the principal hotels of the united states were manufactured by this firm. their name had long been a synonym for all that was excellent and elegant in the production of fixtures, and their location in chicago in 1881 formed an era in the history of that industry. measures 36 x 31 1/2 inches. remarkable late 19th century two tier american saloon or pub table. features a finely turned and tapered octagonal cast iron base resurfaced in a dark metallic bronze. the circular solid oak wood tiers have been thoroughly refinished. possibly fabricated by the r. rothchild's sons co., cincinnati, oh. the tavern table measures 36 inches in diameter and 31 1/2 inches tall.
