original c. 1890-1900 american antique single-sided solid bronze metal sidewalk marker or identification plaque manufactured by or for the northwestern tile company, located in the builders' exchange building in milwaukee, wi. the nicely weathered and worn plaque contains lightly embossed lettering. the plaque was originally mounted directly into the cement. the northwestern tile company achieved marked success in laying cement pavements, and in their leading specialty—gramtic sidewalks—and since the company was inaugurated in 1890, they have executed much first-class work, noteworthy among the sidewalks laid by them include, but not limited, to, houses on broadway and buffalo street, fifty thousand feet square; fred. miller brewing company, thirty-five thousand square feet; pabst brewing company, twenty-five thousand square feet; schlitz brewing company, fifteen walks; blatz brewing company, emanuel presbyterian church, st. james' church, bradley estate and hundreds of other residences. they also laid the sidewalk and floor of the new city hall, about fifty thousand square feet. the company's office was located in the builders' exchange, of which they were members. the range of work included granitic sidewalks and general pavements, cement gutters and curbs, basement floors, etc.
