very unusual antique american reinforced galvanized steel wire mesh fencing mask or helmet with a unique grid-like eye shield. the backside of the mask contains a reinforced elongated wire hoop used to fasten the mask securely against the back of the head. fencing is a family of combat sports using bladed weapons. currently, three types of weapon are used in olympic fencing, which includes the foil, epee and sabre. modern fencing originates in the 19th century, as a direct continuation of the 18th century french school of fencing which had in turn been influenced by the italian school of the renaissance. structurally sound with minor surface rust. likely manufactured by the castello fencing equipment co., inc., new york.
