all original rare c. 1919-20 antique american industrial coin-operated automatic parcel storage locker salvaged from the non-extant grand central station, chicago, il. the heavy gauge all-metal locker contains eight spacious compartments. several lockers were installed by the chicago & north western in the waiting rooms of several of its important passenger stations, which enabled patrons to check their own baggage without the necessity for having a parcel checking room and and an attendant. the cabinets were typically constructed in three different sizes or configurations, in batteries of 8, 12, or 16 lockers. the unlocking of the door would automatically lock the key so that it would not be withdrawn again until a single dime was deposited. the cabinets were designed and fabricated by the coin controlled lock company, chicago, il. the american locker company (boston, mass.) were identified through various patents as the sole owners and operators of the self-service lockers. the eight unit locker retains the original baked olive green enameled finish. the original labels, containing instructions, letter banks and numbers remain largely intact. the coin slots were removed long ago. only one unit available. measures approximately 30 x 28 x 80 inches.
