original late 19th century american victorian era black enameled interior residential fireplace grate and/or surround designed and fabricated by bridgeford & co., louisville, ky. the ornamental cast iron gas insert is bedecked with a multitude of neoclassical style design motifs. the protruding hood, fender and lower grate are original and intact. mostly uniform black paint finish with surface wear evident, with traces of an old oxidized copper plated finish. functional gas valve key and flue lever intact. the insert was salvaged from a south side chicago graystone residence undergoing demolition. measures 30 1/2 x 24 inches.
