i'm always amazed at what people leave behind when salvaging residential and commercial structures faced with the wrecking ball. just recently, i found a hardbound scrapbook documenting one's journey across the country and into mexico by railroad in 1891. the largely intact oversized tomb was lodged in the rafters of an old cottage undergoing demolition. the scrapbook begins with an albumen print of the s.s. teutonic and ends with albumen prints of mexico. additional pages (double-sided) include pasted lithograph collages cut from popular 19th century "scenic view" books picked up in american cities the traveler visited.
