early 20th century antique american residential entrance door "new departure" mechanical doorbell rotating "finger twist" handle likely fabricated by the new departure mfg. co., bristol, ct. retains the original rococo style flush mount backplate containing two screw holes that flank the protruding knob. rotating the knob or t-handle, either to the right or left, communicates to the hammer-shaft (creating a rapid rotary motion), whereby the hammers are caused to strike the inner surface of the bell or gong in rapid succession. doorbell not included. minor surface rust and faint traces of the original copper-plated finish. measures approximately 4 1/4 x 1 5/8 inches.
