hard to find antique c. 1866-1878 privy dug vibrant yellow glass champagne style or "ring top" oversized beer bottle with applied ring fabricated for the lang brothers in chicago, il. the tall body slopes into a long neck finished with an applied single ring. the base is slightly indented with concentric marking from manufacture with a two leaf mold. the front body is embossed with the bottler's name and location. the maker's mark "c&i" is embossed just above the heel. according to chicago city directories, the lang brothers set up two different, sequential companies to bottle mineral and soda water between 1868 and 1878. the first attempt was in 1868, by brothers august and william. they were listed in 1868 as “mineral water manufacturers” at 171 n. clark. in 1870, august and frederick began a second "lang bros." soda and mineral water bottling operation at 268 wells. this business venture was a more successful one, and the two brothers were bottling partners until 1878, after which frederick c. lang took over and ran the bottling works on his own.
