exceptional and hard to find limited edition freestanding gypsum cement sculpture depicting a uniquely designed chicago "graystone" house facade likely modeled after an existing home from chicago. the highly collectible ceramic sculpture was hand-crafted and signed by local chicago artist alice "zani" jacobsen. the single-sided house facade does contain some surface wear consistent with age. alice jacobsen was well-known for her remarkably creative sculptural reliefs of prominent 19th-century historic chicago buildings and residential structures. her ceramic facades of the old paradise and chicago theaters were featured in an exhibit at the cooper hewitt museum in new york. jacobsen was a graduate of the art institute of chicago and taught design there early in her career. she also worked as a plate designer for norcross cards, a display designer for marshall fields & co., and as an artist for jo mead designs, a chicago firm specializing in antique reproductions. she was a member of the landmarks preservation council of illinois, the theater historical society, friends of downtown and the art institute of chicago alumni. her medium was a wax-based clay from which she carved an original, created a mold and cast a limited number of copies in a gypsum cement. her subjects include taverns, theaters, fire stations, private homes, cta elevated stations and even chicago`s now defunct, yet still beloved riverview amusement park. towers, turrets, slate and copper gable roofs, bays, balconies, piers, chimneys and stained glass abound on these buildings. many of them still stand in the logan square, humboldt park, wicker park, old town triangle, gold coast, prairie avenue, pilsen, kenwood, hyde park and pullman neighborhoods.
