scarce early 20th century original antique american single-sided cast bronze city sidewalk recessed plaque fabricated by or for the city of chicago streets and sanitation department. the initials "e.a.f." are lightly incised next to the street name. the sidewalk marker or plaque was set within a concrete sidewalk along shields avenue. these plaques were used to determine property lines, right-of-way, etc. the surface lettering and border contains age appropriate wear from decades of foot traffic and exposure to the elements. the plaque was acquired from a city street project foreman who had collected them when sidewalk were being replaced over the years. the plaque was removed when the concrete was broken up and kept as a "souvenir." measures approximately 13 3/4 x 2 1/2 inches.
