original 19th century antique american fanciful cast iron single doorknob backplate with faint traces of a copper-plated finish. the exact hardware fabricator is not known. the intact passage door backplate has been brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a cleared coat lacquer. the backplate contains a dazzling arrangement of allover scrollwork. the grooved or fluted thimble is free from damage. measures approximately 5 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches.
