original vintage industrial c. 1950's american penitentiary cell desk comprised of heavy gauge cold-rolled steel. the all-welded metal stationary prison desk was likely fabricated by the stewart iron works, convington, ky. the desk contains a compartmentalized module for storage of personal articles. the distinctive swing-out seat contains a reinforced pivoting bracket, supporting a tightly affixed pressed and folded circular-shaped seat. the angled stretcher doubles as a footrest. the jail desk has been brushed down to bare metal and sealed with a clear coat lacquer. the institutional desk was originally bolted against the floor and wall of a 6 x 8 prison cell. salvaged from the maryland penitentiary, baltimore, md. measures 36 x 16 x 30 inches.
