sizable group of matching hard to find american antique new york city sidewalk vault lenses possibly designed and fabricated by or for s.b. althause & sons, new york city, ny. each individual solid glass vault lens has been thoroughly cleaned and refurbished. the lenses were originally set into cast iron sidewalk panels found in front of storefronts. the lenses permitted daylight to reach otherwise dark areas that extended out beneath the sidewalks, which created more rentable and/or useable space for building owners. each panel was affixed to an iron saddle and framework that spanned the basement vault. molded iron knobs surrounded the lenses to both protect the glass and improve the footing for pedestrians. priced for the entire lot. Measures 3/4 x 2".
