original 19th century american victorian era interior residential fireplace gas insert or grate possibly fabricated by the peerless mfg. co., louisville, ky. the largely intact gas burning insert is comprised largely of cast iron with a uniform metallic gold enameled finish. the neoclassical style grate features a slightly protruding figural lion head above the hood containing delicate ribbons and swag. the detachable pierced metal bottom panel or grille is composed of vitruvian scrollwork with a small central opening for a gas key (used to regulate the flow of gas). the cast iron insert was salvaged from a chicago graystone residence. dates to 1890-95. measures 25 x 31 inches.
