possibly branford lock works or the chicago hardware co.
original and intact 19th century american victorian era patented lever doorknob and backplate designed and fabricated by the chicago hardware company or possibly branford lock works. the the uniquely shaped escutcheon with lever and single keyhole is comprised of cast iron. the mineral doorknob features richly colored earth tones. the knob and escutcheon were designed for mortise locks without the need for a spindle. the knob shank is secured to the escutcheon, which is boxed out sufficiently to allow play for a lugged plate, turning with the shank and acting against a lever. the latter is hinged at the top and fitted with an arm at the bottom which works in a slot through the lock, drawing back the latch by a direct, lateral action. the escutcheon is secured by long screws above and below the lock. there is no spindle to work loose and rattle, no screws in the shank to drop out, and no adjustment of washers or screws, as the knob has a perfect adjustment to any thickness of door without binding. refinished and clear coated.
