a new blog post category will crack the vault of images taken by eric j. nordstrom over the last 15 years

--combing through tens of thousands of images taken over 15 years ago when i switched to digital photography--

i possess thousands of folders filled with photographs largely revolving around 19th and early 20th century american city architecture. these include images of signage, surfaces, streets, storefronts and anything else that caught my eye within a given urban landscape. i recall spending a great deal of time aimlessly wandering around downtown areas, documenting things that  felt innately interesting to me, as i visually processed my surroundings.

looking back at the images, i remember feeling a strong sense of escape and effortlessly being lost in the moment, especially after spending grueling hours in the laboratory where i was mapping out signal transaction pathways, administering pharmacological treatments to our transgenic mice, writing and reading peer-reviewed papers and textbooks.

when i was on the streets with my camera, i was utterly consumed with capturing anything and everything before it was altered or disappeared altogether through demolition, facadectomies, renovations, and restorations. i quickly realized that this was not just a hobby, but was hugely therapeutic, providing me with a much-needed balance and a dichotomous lifestyle where i could toggle back and forth between these passions that consumed much of my time - at least through most of graduate school.

for years, i've transplanted these images from one computer to the next, but have not had the time to revisit them and most importantly, share them with you, the reader. i'm going to make a habit of arranging collections of images to share in the photo-gallery posts as i slowly navigate through these largely dormant and forgotten folders.

i haven't quite hammered out the parameters in terms of posting them by themes, chronology, etc. in fact, this first "inaugural" post marks the starting point for unleashing images from my archives that is simply entitled "portfolio." if i recall correctly, there are four of these "portfolio" folders containing some of my favorite images taken early on when i purchased my first digital camera way back when.

the images have not been altered in any way. any and all editing (e.g., use of sepia toning, etc.) was done shortly after i began experimenting with editing the images after they were taken. it's interesting to look over these images to gain a better insight into what my "mind's eye" was interested in capturing at that point in time. clearly, not much has changed over the past 15 years.
