two-story mid-1880's brick workers cottage on marshfield street demolished

another well-maintained 19th century brick workers cottage, boasting an interior that had been unaltered since the depression, was ripped apart in a matter of hours earlier this week. the two-story brick cottage, bedecked with a bracketed wood cornice, deeply incised window hoods or headers, and the original double pine wood paneled doors with original jamb, was built in 1885 during the height of chicago's building boom, when cottages, multi-story boarding houses, and flats were being constructed, expanded and moved throughout chicago's neighborhoods at a dizzying pace.
the cottage interior retained much of the original architectural elements (e.g., trimwork, hinged doors, hardware, and staircase). in fact, the basement, with original paved brick flooring, still contained a coal room filled with piles of unused coal, mason jars, and stacks of local newspapers dating to 1939. i was taken aback by this discovery; in disbelief that this house dodged the whole host of damaging modifications i observe when documenting the structures slated for demolition. witnessing such a rarity made it especially difficult to photograph the utter devastation resulting from an afternoon of relentless wrecking. the 19th century brick cottage was located at 1085 n. marshfield street (formerly known as rumsey street according to an 1886 sanborn insurance map). both the brick cottage and its wood-framed neighbor to the north had already been built by this time. according to the insurance map, the surrounding blocks were still predominantly wood-framed cottages, either surviving the great chicago fire of 1871, or built during an era when an overabundance of lumber greatly reduced the cost of construction outside of the chicago "fire limits."
