largely intact post-fire chicago wood-framed workers cottage ripped apart in a matter of hours

i spent the greater part of my afternoon - away from shop and studio - to photodocument a largely intact post-fire )1872-1874) wood-framed workers cottage (located in old town) as it was quickly reduced to rubble in a matter of hours. the very first image, where the machine operator punched his bucket through the pair of arch top windows was undeniably painful to witness. several minutes later, the facade, with its bargeboard and bracketed cornice was gone.

an exemplary post-fire chicago wood-framed workers cottage erected shortly after the great chicago fire of 1871.

the ominous green fence wrapped tightly around a historic structure in its final moments before it dies.

no turning back... possibly the worst thing to have witnessed in 2017.

it's especially difficult to witness when the wrecker approaches the doomed structure from the front. the all too familiar sound of splintered wood and smell of wet plaster permeates your senses and becomes burned into your memory.

the moment i wanted to just walk away... instead, i spent another two hours watching the house quickly disappear until all that remained were large interlocking sill plates pegged together.
