two-story victorian era chicago brick boarding house on marshfield reduced to rubble in a matter of hours

1035 north marshfield (the street was known as rumsey at the time of construction), a two-story victorian era brick boarding house with decorative lemont limestone trim above the windows and entrance, was demolished in a matter of hours late last week. the following images and brief descriptions provide a visual record of its existence before being reduced to rubble. perhaps the most notable event surrounding the tragic loss of yet another representation of 19th century chicago, was the discovery of a completely intact beer bottle left in one of structure's wall cavities by a tradesman. additional information on the beer bottle, where it was found, etc., was posted in a previous blog entry.

preliminary research was done shortly before posting this entry in order to obtain the most accurate build date since the beer bottle left by a tradesmen involved in building the structure was distributed over the course of several years. an 1886 sanborn insurance map shows the lot as being underdeveloped - surrounded by one and two-story wood-frame cottages that were likely built during the 1860's-1880's. by the early 1890's the wood cottages were being replaced with larger masonry or brick boarding houses designed to accommodate more tenants. building records and city directories indicate that the recently demolished structure was built between 1889-1893.
