bldg. 51 museum acquires sizable cache of louis h. sullivan-designed chicago stock exchange building (1894) hardware

louis h. sullivan-designed chicago stock exchange building (18930 door hardware, executed by the yale & towne mfg. co., stamford, ct. the ornamental cast iron hardware retains the original bower-barff finish, consisting of a magnetic iron oxide coating applied by exposure to superheated steam. 


the hardware pictured, was designed for use with the building's office, passage, utility, and swinging doors. the hinged "letters" mailslots and chutes or hoods (the latter missing), were mounted on the office doors below the panes of glass containing the name of the business. the building's wood sash frames with massive plate glass panes, required two sash handles, mounted on opposite sides of the windows. 

the newly acquired hardware (including duplicates) are presented below, with richard nickel photographs taken in 1971-72 while documenting the chicago stock exchange building's interior, including sullivan-designed hardware "in situ."
