one of a kind c. 1879 interior residential solid cherry wood hand-carved passage door header block with trefoil leafage

original c. 1870's american eastlake style interior residential solid cherry wood header block featuring intricately designed, hand-carved trefoil leafage set within a centrally located beveled edge recessed panel. the interior trimwork was salvaged from a downtown chicago mansion built in 1879. the stately residence contained unsurpassed craftsmanship in the form of highly stylized marble mantles, finely turned spindles and newel posts, fretwork and cabinetry - all amazingly preserved until the wrecking ball arrived to make way for a large storefront/condo complex. cronkhite & herren, along with palmer, fuller & co. made some of the finest millwork during this time period. according to period catalogs, cherry was considered the most expensive, followed by walnut and mahogany. the header blocks were found throughout the first floor of the residence. the large square nails have been removed from the backside of the block. measures 6 x 10 inches.
