intact and all original c. late 1890's or early 1900's privy dug clear glass vinegar bottle in an unusual barrel shape. the cylindrical ridged body tapers steeply into a short neck and flared lip. the front body has six rings around centrally embossed lettering "schuyler's / alden pure cider / vinegar". crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture. the glass features some spots of discoloration or minor surface wear, typical of having been dug. schuyler & cook were one of the oldest and best established vinegar firms in the city of chicago. they operated at 161 kinzie street, and the leading wholesale grocers advertised their products as being free from adulteration. when, in the 1890's, legislation was designed to prevent the adulteration of foods, a chemical analysis of schuyler's vinegar found many of their goods to be below standard, and the firm could no longer sell their vinegar as "pure" in certain states.
