19th century antique american victorian era interior residential fireplace summer cover or "grate" salvaged from a brooklyn residence built around 1889. the unique single-sided summer cover contains a raised pierced metal panel with delicate scrollwork. the innermost panel features a lightly embossed winged bird resting and a branch with leafage. the original japanned or baked black enameled finish remains largely intact. fabricated by the conover fireplace mfg. co., new york. measures 28 1/2 x 20 inches.
