charles kluetsch, chicago, il.
intact and original c. 1880's-1890's vibrant blue aqua hutchinson soda bottle fabricated for charles kluetsch in chicago, il. the high-shouldered bottle tapers into a short neck and wide, rounded applied blob top that is intact except for a minor flat chip at the lip's edge. heavy whittling and stretch marks from the neck to shoulders lend character and crudity to this bottle. the front body is embossed inside a round slug "charles kluetsch / chicago illinois" concentrically around a "ck" monogram and the words "trade /mark". the base is smooth. crudities are typical of its age and date of manufacture, including haze, irridization, and discoloration from being dug. city directories indicate charles kluetsch was a grocer in the mid-1860's. by 1872 he purchased the egermann and sons brewery in naperville with george von hollen, renaming it the dupage brewery; their business was short lived. city directories indicated kluetsch owned a saloon at 209 e. 18th street in the mid-1880's.
