bridgton glass works, new jersey
exceptionally colored and remarkably intact mid-19th century privy dug andrews & johnston teal green iron-pontiled soda or mineral water bottle fabricated by the bridgton glass works (1836-1855), new jersey. the richly colored bottle contains embossed lettering, in the form of the bottler's name and the city (abbreviated) below, with the traditional diminutive letter "a." the crude long and narrow neck is slightly off-center; a testament to the early glass making techniques employed during the 1850's. the dug bottle has been lightly cleaned, but discoloration is evident. the applied lip is tapered with a single ring below. whittle marks, air bubbles or "seeds," and other imperfections evident. 185's philadelphia city directories identify their business as bottlers.
