mid-nineteenth century antique american teal-colored glass medicine bottle manufactured for locius wishart in philadelphia, pa. the body is square with sloping beveled corners and an applied tapered collar. the base is smooth and each slightly recessed side features clean embossment, one side with the manufacturers’ name, another with the pine tree logo and “patent / 1859”, and the next “pine tree / tar cordial / phila,” the latter abbreviated with raised end-letter. crudities typical of the age and date of manufacture include slop on the finish, whittling in the neck, and bubbles throughout the body. in 1859 a chemist l.q.c. wishart introduced his pine tree tar cordial. he was located at 10 south second street in philadelphia, pennsylvania. he eventually moved to a larger facility at 232 north second street in philadelphia. a few years later, in 1861 he started producing dr. wishart's great american dyspepsia pills and in 1865 dr. wishart's worm sugar drops. sometime in the early 1870's lucius’ son henry r. wishart inherited the pine tree tar cordial. a short time later he sold the company to harry c. campion and his son john w. campion who were druggists in the philadelphia area. harry's other son franklin joined the company and it was at this point called the campion bothers. the company changed the name again when franklin retired in 1897 to j. w. campion & company. j.w. continued producing the pine tree tar cordial into the 1900s. an advertisement stated that "pine tree tar cordial was a remedy for the cure of throat and lung diseases". it is thought that bottles with the word trademark embossed appeared after 1873.
